CDC and Nigeria collaborate for COVID-19 response (1 minute)
Nigeria has Africa’s largest population with 216 million people and has been severely impacted by COVID-19. CDC and Nigeria worked together to respond and save lives. US-CDC provided help with epidemiology (detecting disease), laboratory, surveillance, case management, infection prevention and control, risk communications, and vaccine uptake and safety. Nigeria CDC (NCDC) used prior investment from the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) to repurpose laboratories to test for COVID-19. CDC utilized the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) to teach public health emergency management to more than 200 frontline responders. Nigeria was then able to set up Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) services at the country’s points of entry, including airports, seaports, and land borders, to help control the spread of COVID-19. These investments will continue to be valuable to keep up the COVID-19 response and address the next public health threat.
