India’s Health Ministry has reported a rise in Covid-19 cases, mainly in Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. A new subvariant, NB.1.8.1, was detected in Tamil Nadu in April. Kerala accounts for 43% of active cases, followed by Maharashtra (21%). Although some deaths have been reported, their direct link to Covid is still under review. Globally, countries like Singapore are also seeing a surge in cases, with the virus now behaving more like a seasonal respiratory illness. Factors behind the rise include waning immunity, emerging variants, seasonal trends, and reduced testing. Most hospitalised patients have pre-existing conditions, and no significant spike in severe cases has been noted. The WHO is monitoring eight variants, including JN.1 and its descendant NB.1.8, but none are currently classified as variants of concern. People are advised to wear masks, isolate if symptomatic, and take extra precautions if they belong to high-risk groups.
