HMVP Virus: How Similar Is HMPV To COVID-19? Here’s What You Need To Know About This Emerging Virus

China is experiencing a surge in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, raising questions about its similarities to Covid-19. HMPV, like Covid-19, causes respiratory illness with symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath, primarily affecting the upper respiratory system. Both viruses spread through respiratory droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. As per the US CDC, HMPV infections have an incubation period of 3 to 6 days. Currently, there is no vaccine for HMPV, and treatment options remain limited. Surge in HMPV cases in northern China has increased hospitalizations, though no state of emergency has been declared. Meanwhile, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed no HMPV cases in India.
